Facilitator: Joyce E Rioux, EdD, OTR/L, SCSS

Bio: Joyce E Rioux, EdD, OTR/L, SCSS is the Assistant Director of Therapies at the Capitol Region Education Council in Connecticut. She has more than 35 years experience in school system practice. At the local level, she is an advocate for promoting and protecting the full scope of occupational therapy practice in schools. Dr. Rioux presents at local, state, and national conferences on topics specific to school therapy practice and professional development. She co-edited and authored chapters for AOTA’s recent publication of Best Practices for Occupational Therapy in Schools, 2nd edition.

Description: This community of practice will bring together Connecticut school occupational therapy practitioners to focus on Best Practices for Occupational Therapy in Educational Settings.  Through collective critical inquiry and reflection participants will intentionally learn, pool knowledge, and share resources to better our practice.

We are fortunate that the Connecticut SDE & RESC Alliance will sponsor Local School Occupational Therapy Communities of Practice and that ConnOTA will support additional events to build statewide connections and exchange of information.

Goals:

  1. Build the capacity of school occupational therapy practitioners to effectively support the development, learning, and needs of students in our schools, districts, regions, and state.
  2. Create a shared understanding of best practices in school occupational therapy.
  3. Allow for a network of school occupational therapy practitioners to connect on a consistent basis through formal (e.g., virtual meetings, conferences) and informal (e.g., emails) structures designed to create community.
  4. Provide ongoing, focused and applicable professional learning opportunities that are routinely adjusted and revised based on the needs identified by group members.
