Title of the event: Guidelines for Occupational Therapy in Connecticut Schools

 

This session will provide an overview of the new 2017 Guidelines for Occupational Therapy in Connecticut Schools.  Specific content areas will be highlighted to emphasize the inclusion of current laws and regulations, best practice, and application of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework -3.  Participants will have an opportunity to examine their own practice or knowledge of school occupational therapy in relation to the guidelines document.  Following contemplation, participants will create a plan for future learning focused on own professional development and continued competence in school practice.

Speaker Name and Credentials: Sharon McCloskey, MBA, OTR/L and Joyce E Rioux, EdD, OTR/L, SCSS

 

Bio/Background of the speaker:

 

Joyce Rioux is the Assistant Director of Therapies at Capitol Region Education Council in Connecticut.   She has over 30 years experience in school system practice. At the local level, has advocated for the publication of current occupational therapy guidelines in Connecticut’s educational programs. At the national level, serves as chair for AOTA’s Board for Advanced and Specialty Certification. Presents at local, state, and national conferences on topics specific to school therapy practice and professional development.

 

Sharon McCloskey is Clinical Assistant Professor at Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Connecticut.  Prior to being a full-time occupational therapy educator, Sharon had 25 years’ experience as a pediatric practitioner, and was in school system practice.  Sharon developed and managed many school system Student Support Service programs in Lower Fairfield and New Haven counties, Connecticut.  From 2011 to 2016 Sharon was Chair of the Guidelines Project for Occupational Therapy in Connecticut Schools, in partnership with ConnOTA and the Connecticut State Department of Education.  During this time period, she also was a member of the State Student and Educator Support Services Workgroup, as part of the Connecticut SEED initiative.  Sharon also is member of AOTA RtI and Transitions Workgroups.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Relay the process and decision for posting the 2017 Guidelines for Occupational Therapy in Connecticut Schools through ConnOTA.

  2. Identify new content contained within the Guidelines document and compare to own practice.

  3. Create a plan for future learning focused on your own professional growth and continued competence in school practice.
